Today, half of the US population still believe in the former, condemning the latter as a heresy responsible for the current moral crisis. In the state of Tennessee, the battle is being fought out in the arena of the education system. An anti-evolution bill being debated by the US Senate would ban its teaching as anything other than a theory. Presenting evolutionary biology as fact could result in prosecution. With the US Presidential election looming, the debate has assumed even more importance with priests, politicians and professors taking a stand as they await the verdict of the Senate.
