    • YouTube

Dave Lee and the Signal Snowboards crew are back tackling a new hybrid snowboard project that's inspiring on many levels. This month's challenge is to merge Signal snowboards technology and Crankbrothers Mountain bike component technology to create a new next-level custom adaptive snowboard customized to get a new crew of shredders on the hill. The motivation for the build is personal — in 2000, good friend and pro snowboarder Tim Ostler was paralyzed from the chest down in a halfpipe snowboarding accident. Despite maintaining an athletic lifestyle, Tim hasn't been snowboarding since. Watch as the crew build one of the most rewarding boards to date and, after a few setbacks, succeed in getting Tim back out riding with his friends on Every Third Thursday. We encourage you to push this video forward and share it with everyone you know! How cool would it be if this ETT finds its way into production. So, hit play and let's all Raise The Bar and give some serious thought to the Next Level Adaptive Snowboard!

In an effort to do their part to bring a little education, fun, and snowboarding to a very serious subject, Signal and KAB Founder Shaney Jo Darden create a custom Breast Cast of Signal graphics leader Meg Smith (Meg sheds her shirt!), and build a custom Bra Board. Model Susan Holmes McKagen makes a surprise appearance to help with the snowboard build. And when the Bra Board is ready to shred, the lacy lingerie is handed off to Signal snowboarders Melissa Riitano, Katie Williams, and Jamie Madrid for the most important part of the build — a thorough exam on snow at California's Mountain High resort. With the build complete, it's time to test out the voltage off the grid. Snowboarder Tyler Flanagan straps in and charges the Mammoth Mountain jumps while charging his electronics at the same time - this electrifying new board passes the test. It's a blast!

  • S03E06 Noncents Penny Snowboard

    • January 17, 2013
    • YouTube

Every Third Thursday is about ideas, about engineering, about the beauty of manufacturing and always pushing the boundaries. So what happens when Dave Lee and the Signal Snowboards crew come up with an idea that has nothing to do with any of those meaningful aspects? They run with it! This month's factory challenge is to build a snowboard integrating pennies — pennies in the base and "penny traction" edges specifically. Jake Olson-Elm is the chosen one to ride what might just be the worst ETT idea ever. Priceless! Hit play now to watch some noncents go down! Heads or tails, we think this month's episode is still a winner!

  • S03E07 Fragile Glass Snowboard

    • February 21, 2013
    • YouTube

For this month's episode, Signal Snowboards' Founder Dave Lee leaves the factory to travel across the sea to an Italian glass factory to create a handmade glass snowboard — the most delicate build to date! The glass snowboard is cut, pressed, tempered, and ever so carefully transported to the slopes. Signal Snowboards Italian team rider Giorgio "Iannino" Morell takes it for the all important test ride at Abetone ski resort in Tuscany. See how this glass artwork performs under pressure — will it slide or shatter?

  • S03E08 The World's First 3D Printed Snowboard

    • March 21, 2013
    • YouTube

Snowboards have traditionally been made of wood, resin, laminates, and P-Tex — until now! The Signal Snowboard's factory crew, led by Founder Dave Lee give the board presses a rest this month and instead print out a brand new snowboard! Using new 3D printer technology, Dave Lee and Signal Engineer Jeb Ferria input a basic CAD drawing along with a carbon-based powder into a state of the art Plastic Laser Sintering Machine — the end result is a radical powder gun (no not that kind of gun — a snowboard) ready for riding in the steep and deep of Colorado. Signal Teamrider Matt Guess and Dave Lee put the board through the paces, and it passes with flying powder. Another ETT success story!

  • S03E09 Project Runway Signal & FIDM Snowboards

    • April 18, 2013
    • YouTube

Signal Snowboards drops into high fashion this month on Every Third Thursday. Series host Dave Lee and the Signal factory crew team up with The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) and student designer Kelly Knaggs to create an avant-garde snowboard to complement her outerwear line. Utilizing fabric and sublimated metal imagery as visual elements and an unusual asymmetrical shape featuring a tail whip, the Signal factory crew, in true Project Runway fashion, complete the final piece just in time for the runway premier at FIDM. The flashy board passes the fashionable test — but is it functional? Manu Dominguez and Pat Garvin put the board to the test at Bear Mountain. The whipped tail shape with a short toeside edge and a longer heelside makes for a real soul surfer of a board.

  • S03E10 Got Wood? Pinewood Derby Snowboard

    • May 16, 2013
    • YouTube

Signal Snowboards cap an epic 2012/13 winter with a good old fashioned derby race! Paying tribute to traditional pinewood derby races, Signal founder Dave Lee rounds up pinewood 2x4s as the foundation for these unique snowboards. The Signal crew then gets to work in the factory planing and gluing the 2x4s to create the base for each board. Custom graphics are added, then it's time to hit the road to Mammoth Mountain. Snowboarders Ian Thorley, Dylan Synnott, Joey Yorba and friends meet up with Dave to transform these boards into their own custom derby destroyers! With boards assembled the guys hit the hill to compete on their creations. You won't believe the speed these guys get on 2x4s! Goodbye winter — hello summer 2013!

Season 4

  • S04E01 Board Overboard Underwater Snowboard

    • September 19, 2013
    • YouTube

ETT Season 4, episode 1: In the season premier of ETT, the Signal Snowboard crew attempts to use the naturally occurring deep ocean pressure to replace the role of a pneumatic press — the machinery currently used to bind the layers of a snowboard together — in production. On location in New Zealand's Milford Sound, ETT host Dave Lee and Signal Snowboard's co-founder Marc Wierenga hastily assemble the layers of the snowboard, then sink the final product 100 feet (30 meters) deep under the ocean with hopes that the pressure at these great depths will bind the layers. Natural production — is it possible? We find out in this episode of ETT!

  • S04E02 Oktoberfest Beer Bong Snowboard

    • October 17, 2013
    • YouTube

ETT Season 4, episode 2: Signal Snowboard's Dave Lee and teamrider Jake Olson-Elm get serious about 'apres ski' in this episode of ETT, building a functioning snowboard beer bong — the snowboarder's version of the shotski — just in time for Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany! The build starts off at the Reichmann factory where hoses and nozzles are carefully built into the snowboard, then it's off to test it out at Oktoberfest — the home of serious beer drinking! Finally, lets find out if this party board can carve the slopes of Hintertux Glacier? Every hour is happy hour on this episode of ETT! Prost!

  • S04E03 True Grit Experimental Sandboard

    • November 21, 2013
    • YouTube

ETT Season 4, episode 3: Signal Snowboard's Dave Lee builds two experimental snowboards at the Signal Factory with the goal of riding epic sand dunes in a world without snow. One board features an ABS plastic base and the other a Formica base, both with the goal of overcoming the challenge of speed on sand. The setting for the test is California's Glamis Dunes, a motorsports recreational mecca with steep mountainous dunes. The test has a sticky outcome, which leads to a new world compromise — enter Professional off road racer Rob MacCachren and his off road trophy truck! Snowboarders Spencer Link and Nick Sibayan get the ride of their lives behind Rob's truck to see if, with a little help, they can get the same effect on sand as on snow. Looks like the driver might be getting more face shots than the riders in this episode of ETT. Back to the drawing board! What new base materials do you think would work to get this board sliding on sand? Leave your comments below!

  • S04E04 Piece Out Modular Snowboard

    • December 19, 2013
    • YouTube

ETT Season 4, episode 4: What would happen if, instead of having to buy a brand new snowboard every time you blew out an edge or gouged your base, you could just replace the broken piece? Dave Lee and the Signal factory crew explore the possibility of a modular snowboard in this month's episode of Every Third Thursday. Incorporating inserts onto each layer, the crew experiments with snapping together the various base, core, and topsheets into different board combinations throughout the day at Bear Mountain. Industry veteran Lance Hakker puts the board through the paces with promising results!

  • S04E05 Spruce It Up Recycled Christmas Tree Snowboards

    • January 16, 2014
    • YouTube

ETT Season 4, episode 5: In this month's ETT, it's time to "Spruce things up" with a snowboard made out of discarded Christmas trees. Dave Lee and the Signal snowboard factory crew take on this arboreal challenge utilizing tree trunks to create the snowboard's topsheet and core. The experimental board comes out of the presses looking rideable, so it's off to Southern California's Mountain High Resort to see if the wood is good! Who would have ever guessed that your snowboard gift wasn't under the tree, but was the tree itself? Merry riding!

  • S04E06 Paper Shredder 100% Recycled Paper Snowboard

    • February 20, 2014
    • YouTube

ETT Season 4, episode 6: In this month's Every Third Thursday, Dave Lee and the Signal crew set out to make a snowboard out of a product that is basically built to fail — paper. Paper has very little structural integrity, which only worsens when it's damp. So it makes perfect sense to try to make this material into a weight bearing, torsion tortured, snow-sliding device with the help of the crew at Ernest Packaging. Dave meets up with Signal teamrider Melissa Riitano and Morrison Hsieh at Copper Mountain in Colorado to see if this board can take the punishment — how many runs do you think they'll get out it — one run, two? On the upside this "paper shredder" is totally recyclable!

  • S04E07 Speed Stick Heated Snowboard

    • March 20, 2014
    • YouTube

ETT Season 4, episode 7: Get ready for some HOT snowboard action in this month's Every Third Thursday! Dave Lee and the Signal Snowboards crew get back to the base-ics, experimenting with new technology to actually heat up the base of a snowboard and test out their theory that a hot base will go faster. Dave explains that the snow sliding action actually works from friction heating up the snow and forming a thin layer of water that the board slides on, but what if we speed up that process by incorporating a heat film into the base? Watch as Dave dials the base all the way up to 128 degrees and snowboarder Alex Cato heats up the slopes of Park City Resort.

  • S04E08 Scratch & Shred Turntable Snowboard

    • April 17, 2014
    • YouTube

ETT Season 4, episode 8: Are you ready? I said, are you READY for this pioneering turntable snowboard?! In true hip hop fashion, Signal Snowboards put together the ultimate collaboration teaming up with one of the greatest DJs in history and contributing member of the Beastie Boys, Mix Master Mike, who not only provided direction on this build but also an original track for the episode. Custom board graphics come courtesy of artist MadSteez, and the clutch components including the turntable and mixer come courtesy of leading DJ equipment manufacturer Vestax. From the ultimate collab comes the ultimate DJ board complete with a functioning turntable and mixer. We tested it twice — the DJ capabilities were proven at the Vestax Store grand opening on Melrose street in downtown Los Angeles, and ride-ability was confirmed on the slopes of Bear Mountain, California jamming to Mix Master Mike's custom track. Aw yeah!

  • S04E09 Night Rider Floodlight Snowboard

    • May 15, 2014
    • YouTube

ETT Season 4, episode 9: It's lights out for Dave Lee and the Signal Snowboards crew! As the 2014 season winds down, the goal is to keep snowboarding past the daylight hours and Dave has just the solution — a snowboard with headlights. The crew fashion a custom board with dedicated mounts at the factory to accommodate a variety of LED Lenser flashlights and lamps. Then comes the fun part, the crew travel up North to Baldface Lodge and test out these night riding boards in epic deep powder conditions. This is what happened while you were sleeping!

    • June 19, 2014
    • YouTube

ETT Season 4, episode 10: In this episode of Every Third Thursday, Signal Snowboards teams up with the Unknown Industries Harley stunt biking crew to collaborate on custom snowboard motorcycle racks and snowboards. The Unknown crew including Nick Leonetti, Buddy Suttle, and Kade Gates rally with ETT host Dave Lee to Bear Mountain to try out the new racks and the new boards. It's possible that they do more tricks on their bikes on the way up to Bear Mountain than on their boards coming down — it's all about wheelies, burnouts, and boardslides in this episode of ETT!

Season 5

  • S05E01 Dig It Earth Pressed Snowboard

    • October 16, 2014
    • YouTube

ETT Season 5, episode 1: Dig it — A new snowboard press inspired by an old Hawaiian cooking technique! In this episode of Every Third Thursday, Dave Lee and crew drive up to Mt. Hood Oregon posting up at a backwoods snowboarder’s camp with the goal of building a snowboard using foraged materials and a hand dug dirt press. This snowboard is the definition of local with the crew gathering materials from the surrounding forest to build the core of the snowboard. The real challenge comes when it’s time to press all these materials together to seal the layers. Will they be able to cure the board using hot coals and a shallow dirt mold? We’ll find out as the board is put to the test high above on the glaciated snowfield at Mt. Hood’s Timberline Resort. See how this woodsy earth-cured nature board performs!

In this episode of ETT, Dave Lee and the Signal Snowboards crew team up with Matt Davis from namethemachine, Samy Kamkar and Alex Nano to build a snowboard that acts like a video game controller to control the playback of the music. The crew build sensors into the snowboard and create custom software to gather data and manipulate the soundtrack based on the boards motions. Signal rider Daniel Brown tests out the snowboard at Bear Mountain, creating his own custom park riding soundtrack. What would you want to program into this open source board? Let us know in the comments below!

  • S05E04 Hit The Deck Mega Ramp Skateboard & Snowboard

    • January 8, 2015
    • YouTube

ETT Season 5, episode 4: The first pro tested combination skateboard/snowboard! In this episode Dave Lee and the Signal Snowboards crew team up with Lithe, a small skateboard operation out of California that’s using composites in skateboards in a really unique and cool way. The goal of this build is to adapt Lithe’s unique carbon fiber building process to create a snowboard that can double as a skateboard. The board needs to be bomber enough for X Games pro skater Mitchie Brusco to skate on Woodward’s Megaramp, but with enough flex so that we can still turn on snow. We test this dual board out on Camp Woodward’s Megaramp and on the snowy park jumps at Woodward Copper and it got two Mega thumbs up! What do you think of this do everything board? Let us know in the comments below!

  • S05E06 Strung Out Veneer Laminated Surfboard Stringer Snowboard

    • February 19, 2015
    • YouTube

ETT Season 5, episode 6: It feels like summer here in California and we’ve got surfing on our minds as we patiently wait for winter to return. In this episode Dave Lee and the Signal Snowboards crew play around with surfboard stringers — the stringer is the thin strip of wood that runs down the middle of the surfboard to increase the strength and rigidity of the foam board. Dave teams up with Appelcore Stringer to create laminated veneers to use in the construction of two snowboards — one a traditional core snowboard and the other a totally experimental veneer laminate board at half the thickness of a normal snowboard. The crew bails on the beach for the mountains to test out these crossover boards. Does this surf technology make for a great snowboard? Watch the episode to find out and let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Dave finds legendary skateboarder Christian Hosoi’s pro model shape in Professor Schmitt’s workshop, which serves as the foundation for this 7-ply deck. Hosoi himself stops by the factory to add some crucial design input to the shape (wow!). Mr. Fun gets a custom Hosoi grip tape job and then it’s off to the streets of Boston where historic amounts of snow have fallen to see if Mr. Fun delivers on the promise of fun. See this simple board take on snowy streets, parks and everyday urban features with no lift ticket (and no bindings) required. Does this look like fun to you? Let us know in the comments below!
