Based on an authenticated wartime incident, this is the story of a member of the American Intelligence Corps, whose readiness to go far beyond the normal limits of human endurance helped in the successful launching of the Allied attack on Europe from North Africa during World War II. Patricia Neal portrays Jeanne Tremoile, a French doctor in occupied France, who is working as a collaborator with the Germans. Dennis Hopper plays Ferno, a tough young American assigned to deliver vital information to the French Underground after tests have proved his almost superhuman powers of endurance. Charles Gregson portrays Colonel Ballin of British Intelligence, who has to mask his natural instincts as he carries out his plan to send a fellow man to almost certain death when he selects Ferno for his assignemnt.
