Harry sees five patients: a week-old baby, a five-year-old whose father denies the boy's onset diabetes; a seven-year-old curious about sex; an eleven-year-old having the cast removed from his arm; a belligerent 14-year-old who uses drugs; and an 18-year-old picking up his medical records before going away to college. The end of the episode reveals that all of these have been the same patient at different ages.
Carol gets a job at a library, where she meets an obnoxious college professor. Charley joins a Big Buddy program. Barbara teaches Dreyfuss to play Frisbee.
Harry forces Barbara to spend a week at home with him and Carol, away from the stress of police work, when a physical reveals she has a pre-ulcerous condition. The Westons (and Charley) travel to England to their ancestral home Weston Castle, where Harry is to receive the Sword of Weston in a ceremony. Unfortunately he gets locked in a dungeon after following a secret passage. Meanwhile back home, Laverne tries to teach Dreyfuss to ride a skateboard. Richard Mulligan plays three roles in this episode: the usual Harry, a butler named Basil, and a relative Baroness Daphne Weston.
Barbara agrees to drop by and check up on Charley after he receives a death threat. Seeing how much they have in common, Charley becomes smitten with her . Meanwhile, after Harry lets a young patient play with Dreyfuss, the kid tries to buy him.
Carol begins dating Patrick, the Westons' sprinkler man. When his apartment is condemned, Carol persuades Harry to let Patrick move into the garage.

Harry and Charley travel to Las Vegas to see a boxing match but the trip is plagued with problems. Meanwhile, Emily wonders when Carol stopped being her cool big sister when Carol won't let her visiting college friends crash on the living room floor. Emily later regrets her comments when Carol takes control and starts teaching the whole group to do 70's dances.

A small investment in a mall makes Laverne especially bossy. Carol consults an animal psychologist for help when Dreyfuss ignores her after she yells at him.

Meanwhile, strange noises from upstairs make Laverne think the clinic is haunted by the ghosts of men who were murdered there years before.

While at Laverne's going-away party, the gang remembers old times as she prepares to get married and move back to Hickory.
When the clinic closes due to an asbestos problem, Laverne persuades Maxine to go to Hickory with her to help plan her wedding, which Laverne's mother is going overboard with. Meanwhile, Carol announces her engagement to Kevin, Harry decides to sell the house and move to Vermont where he's been offered a teaching job, and Charley and Sophia get lost on the road to Hickory. The wedding plans cease when Laverne elopes, and Carol breaks up with Kevin after hearing of Harry's move.
With the gang fretting over Laverne's elopement, Kevin comes to see Carol and the two decide to get married with Laverne's father performing the ceremony. Laverne and Matt return unhitched and the ceremony becomes a double wedding. Barbara returns home to pack her things, but Harry has second thoughts about moving...until he is confronted by his dead wife Libby's ghost.
