Als sein Chef ihn rauswirft und seine Frau ihn betrügt, zieht der herzensgute Anwalt Ed Stevens (Tom Cavanaugh) zurück in seine Heimat-Kleinstadt Stuckeyville. Er kauft die Bowlingbahn "Stuckeybowl" und richtet darin sein Anwaltsbüro ein. Seine Freunde sind der Arzt Mike Burton (Josh Randall), dessen gestresste Frau Nancy (Jana Marie Hupp), die Lehrerin Carol Vessey (Julie Bowen) und deren beste Freundin Molly Hudson (Lesley Boone), ebenfalls eine Lehrerin. Mike und Nancy haben gerade ein Kind bekommen. Ed und Mike waren schon zu Schulzeiten dicke Kumpel, und Carol war damals der Highschool-Schwarm. Jetzt tut Ed alles, um ihr Herz zu gewinnen, lässt keine romantische Aktion und keinen peinlichen Auftritt aus, doch Carol ist nur als guter Freund an Ed interessiert. Mit der Bowlinghalle übernimmt Ed auch gleich deren Personal, eine Ansammlung schräger Typen: der selbstbewusste und überschwängliche Phil Stubbs (Michael Ian Black), die verstörte Shirley Pifgo (Rachel Cronin) und der große Kenny Sandusky (Mike Starr), der einen seltsamen Humor hat. In der dritten Staffel ersetzt Eli Cartwright Goggins III (Daryl "Chill" Mitchell) Kenny. Mike arbeitet in der Praxis des grantigen alten Quälgeists Dr. Walter Jerome (Marvin Chatinover), der partout nicht in den Ruhestand gehen will. Warren Chestwick (Justin Long) ist einer von Carols Schülern. Ed Stevens is a contracts lawyer at a high-profile New York City firm. Around the same time he splits with his wife (she slept with a mailman), he makes a single error in punctuation when going over a contract; and because of the resulting financial loss to the firm, he's fired. Despondent, he heads back to his (small) hometown of Stuckeyville -- 'Anytown', USA. There he realizes he's been missed by a lot of friends whom he's missed; and he sees Carol, the girl he'd adored in high school. Swept up in roiling emotions, Ed buys the local bowling alley on a whim, moves to Stuckeyville, and determines to win Carol's heart. His horizons broaden as he settles once more in Stuckeyville, and the series itself settles into a charming, funny, often serious slice-of-life series focused not solely on Ed but on the lovable ensemble cast of people who live and work with him in Stuckeyville.
