One of the camping retreats where middle-class families take their summer vacation. Lit by a cold neon light, Mateo looks at himself in the mirror of the communal bathroom. Beneath the thin fabric of his shirt is a strange dark shape. Something is growing from his youthful skin. As he watches, it begins to grow, uncoiling and mutating. Colors swirl dimly in its surface. A young girl in a summer dress, Chloe, steps out of one of the bathroom stalls. Chloe’s eyeliner is smeared around her eyes. Her lip-gloss shines in the fluorescent lights.
