In 1982, the successful surgeon Richard Hoffmann hopes to be appointed successor to the head of the clinic. But a long-term affair and an illegitimate child make him vulnerable to blackmail for the Stasi. Because his family doesn't know about it. He wants his son to become a surgeon too, but he feels less and less understood by his father and instead seeks refuge with his uncle Meno, who works as an editor and gets into trouble when he falls in love with a writer. When Richard now wants to separate from his lover, she threatens to commit suicide...
