Europa 1941: Der Zweite Weltkrieg tobt auch auf See. Deutsche U-Boote sollen britische Versorgungslinien stören. Nach einer Abschiedsfeier geht U-96 erneut auf Feindfahrt. Kriegsberichterstatter Leutnant Werner (Herbert Grönemeyer) erlebt statt Heldentum Enge, Langeweile und Angst. Als Feindkontakt folgt, zeigt sich die grausame Realität des Krieges. Der Kommandant (Jürgen Prochnow) muss über Leben und Tod entscheiden – doch trifft er die richtigen Entscheidungen?
