J.R. ist wieder ganz der alte. Es gelingt ihm sogar, sein Verhältnis zum Kartell in Ordnung zu bringen. Da erfährt er, dass Jocks Testament wohl nicht zu seinen Gunsten ausfallen wird. Ray hingegen kümmert sich überhaupt nicht mehr um die Verwaltung der Ranch.

J.R. finally returns to the business and brings John Ross into the office for the first time. Pam is concerned about whether Christopher came from a healthy family and pressures Bobby to tell her about who Christopher parents were. J.R. is afraid the reading of Jock's will is going to divide Ewing Oil shares in a way he won't like. Lucy's photographer friend Roger starts following her. Cliff gets Afton a singing job. Ray has an affair with a girl from the bar. J.R. sleeps with Marilee Stone and convinces her to talk the cartel into doing business with Ewing Oil again. Bobby has a fight with Ray over his negligence in running the ranch.

J.R. est bien décidé à reprendre en main la compagnie pétrolière. Pour cela, il utilise à la fois le souvenir de Jock et l'aide de Marilee Stone. Mais Sue Ellen est mécontente de voir J.R. entraîner le petit John Ross, à son bureau, pour lui faire comprendre quel sera son avenir. De plus, elle connaît pas mal de difficultés dans sa vie privée, pour maintenir un certain équilibre entre Cliff et Clayton. Au ranch, les négligences répétées de Ray entraînent de violentes confrontations avec Bobby et Ellie. Grâce à Cliff, Afton a pu trouver une place de chanteuse dans un élégant night-club, mais la jeune femme n'est pas dupe et elle se rend compte de l'intérêt croissant que Cliff porte à Sue Ellen.
