The Land Rover has been with me for around six years. It’s a little rough around the edges, but generally OK. I’ve done a bit of mechanical work to it over that time. Including reconditioning the engine, rebuilding the gearbox, rebuilding both axles and the braking system, and many other small fixes along the way. But she has started to go downhill lately, particularly the condition of the body. Most of the body is aluminium, but steel is rusting rapidly. So it’s time to do something about it…

Checking the backlash with a dial indicator, and checking the contact pattern. Next we replace the differential pinion oil seal. The next task is to install the axle plugs and breathers. Then attach the stub axles. From there we rebuild and fit the chrome swivel balls and swivel housings. Including rebuilding the housings with new roller bearings and Railko bushings. We’ll also look at attaching the steering arms, and setting the steering preload or tension using a fish scale.
