Rent collector Rory Connor, played by Robson Green, seeks to escape his humble beginnings in South Shields through gambling. He marries his love, Janie, but their happiness is complicated by his gambling and the appearance of his employer, Charlotte, who also finds him attractive. Rory's ambition and love of the game lead him down a path of high stakes and bad company, with the potential for both fortune and misfortune.
