While surprised, Miss Pony and Sister Lane give their consent for Candy to become a caretaker and teacher with them. But when Candy returns from a field trip with the orphans, Candy notices a fancy car, thinking it must be Archibald and Alistear visiting before they leave for London. Instead it is Mr. George who has come to retrieve Candy, not to the estate, but London. Miss Pony and Sister Lane agree it would be the best thing: she must be educated first before being either a caretaker or teacher. Upset, Candy runs off with Jimmy in a rainstorm. Wet to the bone, Jimmy develops a high fever and despite her efforts Candy cannot help him. Luckily, the adults catch up, and while George takes the ailing Jimmy in his arms, Sister Lane slaps the panicking Candy. Candy realizes she is a playmate to the other orphans rather than a caretaker and she accepts the trip to London, even if Jimmy swears he hates her for not keeping her promise.
Candy décline l’offre de monsieur Cartwright. Elle se sent la vocation de monitrice, mais Georges vient la chercher. Elle s'enfuit sous la pluie avec Jimmy, qui est déjà malade et dont l’état s'aggrave. Elle n’est finalement pas mûre pour être monitrice, mais veille sur Jimmy jusqu’à sa guérison, puis part avec Georges.
Dopo un primo momento di esitazione, Miss Pony e Suor Maria danno il loro consenso affinché Candy divenga una istitutrice dell'orfanotrofio. Ma un giorno al ritorno da una gita con tutti i bambini nota davanti alla porta d'ingresso della casa di Pony un'automobile con lo stemma degli Andrew: pensa che siano Archie e Stear venuti a salutarla prima della partenza. Si tratta invece di George, uomo di fiducia degli Andrew, che è venuto a prendere Candy.
Anche per lei è stato difatti deciso il trasferimento a Londra; Miss Pony e Suor Maria concordano subito che questa è decisamente la scelta migliore per Candy, lei stessa deve difatti esser istruita prima di potere far l'istitutrice. Jimmy, che s'è profondamente affezionato alla ragazza, fugge via sconvolto sotto un fortissimo temporale, il che gli fa venire la febbre alta.
Candy, ancora scossa dalla piega che han preso gli eventi, dopo un'attenta riflessione accetta infine di partire per Londra, anche se ciò fa dire a Jimmy che la odierà per sempre per non aver voluto mantener la promessa di stargli vicino facendogli da madre.
el Abuelo Williams le comunica a Candy que debe irse a Londres a estudiar a un colegio, al principio ella no quiere, pero por su irresponsabilidad cae enfermo Jimmy y se da cuenta que debe ir a estudiar para poder cuidar a los niños, así que decide ir al Colegio en Londres
