We live in a time where you can watch the most explicit hardcore pornography on the same phone you use to call your mother. It may seem absurd now, but fifty years ago, when it came to photos of a naked woman, the line between clean and obscene was pubic hair. Hugh Hefner and Bob Guccione, the publishers of Playboy and Penthouse, were the first pioneers to cross that line in what would become known as the “Pubic Wars.” The conflict between these two magazines is long, heated and ugly. Along the way, the bitter arch-rivals goad one another further and further down a dangerous road that leads to the breadth and depth of pornography available today.
