When Frank Abbott, a professional coach, spots Barry's talents, the boy finds out just how much he has to learn, about himself and about the people he meets.
Frank has persuaded Mr Grieves to let Barry have some free tennis lessons. But Barry's problems are only beginning-he must join a club and try to find a sponsor - and he must practise with Lucy Roberts , and she has problems of her own.
Barry and Lucy have entered a local tournament, but neither is happy with their result. Barry plays Chetwyn, well known on the circuit for his match tactics. The clash between the two is more important for Barry's career than he or Frank realises.
After being sent home from Bisham Abbey, Barry's career in tennis looks as though it may be short-lived. Lucy still has problems at home, too.
In spite of losing his match in the Easter tournament, Barry does have Mr Bousfield 's backing. The problem is that Mr Grieves has insisted on taking over his son's coaching. Perhaps Lucy's determination will help Barry after all, there are the National Junior Grass Court Championships at Eastbourne to consider.
