Ryuunosuke Akutagawa - Qualen der Hölle (Jigoku Hen) handelt von Maler Yoshihide, der als Bester seinesgleichen gilt, und regelmäßig vom König beauftragt wird. Als er das gesamte Reich des Königs malen soll, erkennt er zum ersten Mal die wahre Gestalt des Landes: Es ist die Hölle. Da Yoshihide aber nur malen kann, was er selbst gesehen hat, muss er die Flammen der Hölle suchen, wofür er alles, was nötig ist, opfert.
A famous artist is commissioned by a great lord to create a series of paintings depicting scenes of the 'Buddhist Hell'. The artist is unable to paint scenes that he has not seen himself, prompting him to torture and torment the Lord's staff to create his imagined images of hell. His creative efforts taint the household, as the story descends into madness and destruction.
