The Big Word

Everywhere they go Armenian buildings have been destroyed and the remaining Armenians were forced to convert to Islam. The grim realm drives Sinan and Ara apart. Sinan feels the desire for material evidence that there was indeed a genocide committed. For Ara, this desire only distracts him from reconciling with his Armenian background. For this reason they both go their own way. Ara travels alongside the Syrian border to the only Armenian village in Turkey. He visits Mount Ararat and goes to Ani, the ruins of the former capital of the Armenian Empire.Sinan travels back to Istanbul and goes to Ankara. Over there he gathers evidence and confronts people. And if he finally finds what he's looking for he travels to Kars, in the far east of Turkey to meet Ara again and prepare for the last part of their journey: Armenia.

Overal waar ze komen zijn Armeense gebouwen vernield en zijn de overgebleven Armeniers gedwongen bekeerd tot de islam. De grimmige sfeer drijft Sinan en Ara uiteen. Sinan heeft behoefte aan tastbaar bewijs dat er genocide is gepleegd. Voor Ara leidt die behoefte juist af van zijn wens om zich te verzoenen met zijn Armeense achtergrond. Daarom gaan ze ieder hun eigen weg. Ara reist langs de Syrische grens naar het enige Armeense dorpje in Turkije. Hij bezoekt de berg Ararat en gaat naar Ani, de ruïnes van de voormalige hoofdstad van het Armeense koninkrijk. Sinan keert terug naar Istanbul en gaat naar Ankara. Daar verzamelt hij bewijzen en gaat hij confrontaties aan. En als hij uiteindelijk vindt wat hij zoekt reist hij naar Kars, in het uiterste oosten van Turkije, om Ara weer te ontmoeten en zich op te maken voor het laatste deel van hun reis: Armenië.
