William Frederick Halsey Jr. seemed a throwback to the Jurassic age of naval warfare. While admirals were thinking deep strategic thoughts in Hawaii and Washington, Halsey was eager to hurl his ships alongside an enemy he unabashedly hated. His heart and mouth were on the same hair trigger as his mighty task force's deadly weapons and they got him into more trouble than the enemy ever did. Though he was more fighter than tactician, Halsey's men loved him. When the action was touch and go there was no better man to bellow orders than "Bull Halsey."
