The Battle of Stalingrad

The Battle of Stalingrad is infamous as one of the largest, longest and bloodiest engagements in modern warfare. From August 1942 through February 1943, more than two million troops fought in close quarters – and nearly two million people were killed or injured in the fighting, ultimately turning the tide of World War II in favor of the Allied forces.

Slaget ble et avgjørende vendepunkt i krigen og blir ansett som historiens blodigste slag. Slaget var preget av hensynsløshet og store militære og sivile tap. Utslettelsen av en hel tysk armé blant de forkullede og frosne ruinene til Stalingrad var katastrofe for nazistene. Resultatet ble at Den Røde Armé aldri mistet initiativet i øst.
