A rare and valuable 80's Sierra Cosworth "whale tail" draws in a crowd of admiring fast Ford fans, but has the owner pitched the reserve too high? Also, Derek reluctantly decides to sell some of his own classic car collection to make space in the showroom before visiting Britain's biggest one day motorcycle event. And a restorer delights buyers with his immaculate 1966 Sunbeam Rapier and Sarah takes a shine to a quirky micro-caravan.
A very orange 1970's Bond Bug three-wheeler divides opinion among Mathewsons customers but delights the Bond owners club. A retired engineer reluctantly auctions off his late father's treasured 60's Jaguar MkII. He's had the car in his garage for 30 years but hasn't been able to part with the memories it holds. The owner of a Rover P6 sells the car he lovingly rebuilt for his daughter's wedding and is philosophical despite losing thousands of pounds on the restoration.
A near-perfect ‘50s Chevy panel van and a very desirable low-mileage ‘80s Brooklands Capri tempt auctioneer Derek out of Yorkshire, but traffic chaos on the way to Wales puts him way behind schedule. "I can't be late, I've got no pyjamas" ...says a worried Derek as he realises he is going to have to overnight across the border. Safely back in Yorkshire, he evaluates the cars ahead of the auction - two of the best he has seen. The vehicles' owners have high expectations, the reserves are top end - and the auction is days away. Paul picks up a stunning Matchless Model X motorbike which attracts a lot of pre-auction attention from some vintage motorcycle fans, and Derek and grandson Charlie spend the day at Stokesley Classic Car Show. It's not a relaxing day out for the pair as they've been set a monumental task - valuing the 200 classic cars.
The summer brings an increase in business for Yorkshire classic car auctioneers. To keep pace, the Mathewsons introduce their new "multiple classic collection plan", much to the amusement of office manager Sarah. Dave sets off to collect a Triumph TR6, a Lotus Cortina and a Mini Mayfair wedding car and bring them back to the auction house. The team heads to The Wirral for a rare survivor, a DAF 33 from the ‘70s. "It's a car that had a bit of an image issue back in the day, but it also had a gearbox ahead of its time," says Derek - as everyone tries to explain how it works before the car is auctioned off.
A 1970 Excalibur Roadstar, once owned by Roy Orbison, arrives at Thornton le Dale. Styled on the classic Mercedes SSK, it's a repli-car with a huge pedigree and even bigger 5.7 litre V8. Dexter the dog, a pedigree in his own right, needs a bigger sidecar and a 900cc Triumph Thunderbird with a matching top of the range custom built wide-bodied sidecar fits the bill. And Derek heads to County Durham to collect a 1935 Austin 7 Ulster that's been completely rebuilt.
Derek rubs shoulders with pop music royalty when he picks up a Morgan sports car, a World War Two ambulance arrives at Thornton le Dale and a Ford Model T needs a new home. Derek collects a Morgan sports car that belongs to singer and guitarist Joe Brown. Joe's moving on his 1982 Morgan Plus 8. It's all in a day's work for Derek, who's already had a day of hobnobbing with rock and roll royalty. On the back of his trailer is a 1979 Clenet roadster that he's just picked up from the drummer in the heavy metal band Motorhead. Back at base Chris Carter has just dropped off his wartime Austin K2 ambulance. The vehicle was used on the South Coast to transport wounded soldiers from the ships to hospital. Also making an appearance is a 1915 Ford Model T that belongs to Ray and Tracy Knox. They're hoping that someone else will fall in love with their very original motor that's one of the most influential cars ever made. Derek's a big fan - not just of the car - but of Henry Ford's penny-pinchi
Derek heads off to collect some vintage motorcycles from a garage at the bottom of the garden in the North-East of England. Tom Reed passed away before he could finish some of his projects, but among the treasure are two BSA super rockets, a 1925 New Hudson, a 1955 Norton 500 café racer and a Greeves trials bike. Paul has also lined up a day collecting some exceptional cars including a 1955 Ford Zephyr convertible, and back at base, Dave thinks about buying the DVLA "Repo" lorry that has just pitched up. "You can make some money with this," he says, "just use the crane, pick up the cars and off you go - job done. Trouble is it will crush the roof."
Derek picks up a lovingly restored 1925 Calthorpe motorbike that he thinks is more of a work of art than anything ever produced by Picasso. There's a barn-find Triumph TR4A and a family from Lancashire add another vehicle to their collection of Rootes manufactured cars. Meanwhile, Paul and Charlie collect a pair of veteran motors from the East Midlands.
Derek travels to the Yorkshire coast to pick up a 1963 Austin J2 Paralanian campervan, described as the "Rolls Royce of campervans". Meanwhile Dave heads south to pick up an extremely rare 1969 Ford Cortina 3000 GT Savage Estate that was owned by the legendary British racing driver and creator of the Savage brand of modified Cortinas himself, Jeff Uren. Back at the garage, a Ford Sierra Sapphire 2000E in near mint condition is dropped off for the auction, Jack enjoys some classic tunes from a Scottish bagpiper and young Charlie shows off his new rally car.
Derek heads to Sunderland to pick up a real Italian beauty - a 1972 Lancia Fulvia Zagato. Red and racy, the car has seen better days, but Derek's still impressed "It looks like it'd do 100mph standing still". Meanwhile, a 3-litre V6 Ford Capri complete with roll cage, is wheeled out for the first time in nearly 40 years. And a serial car buyer from Lichfield finds he can't say no to a stunning 1969 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. The car, dating from the late 1960s, has been lovingly restored, and all it took was one look for Wayne to fall in love and buy it. Derek too is bowled over by its charm: "when you get one as nice as this, they do hit you".
There's Hollywood glamour in the air as Derek heads out to pick up a Rolls Royce that once belonged to Fred Astaire. Meanwhile, an 85-year-old ex racehorse trainer hands Dave the keys to an immaculate Subaru Impreza and an E-Type Jag, while a mix up at Pickering HQ sees the wrong Ford Mexico depart for Northern Ireland.
Highlights of a special event featuring an in-person auction. Derek and Dave aim to get the right price for a 1958 Jaguar XK 150 and there's a bidding war for a 1975 Yamaha Fizzy.
