The Carlson family begins their dramatic time travelling adventure in winter of the 1940s. The first winter meal on wartime rations pushes Melanie out of her comfort zone, while Dave must prove his forties handyman skills by building a weather-vane. Daughters Lauren, Alex and Chelsey learn that teen life in the forties is light on fun and heavy on chores.
The Carlsons take on their second wintery decade in this time-travelling experiment – the booming 1950s. Dave tries out a snow-melting tool, while daughters Alex and Chelsey try their hand at ‘50s-style figure skating. Meanwhile, Melanie and eldest daughter Lauren are feeling the strain of the decade's expectations of women.
The Carlson family spends the winter snuggled up inside with the many digital distractions on offer in modern day. After going back in time, the family reflects on what they have discovered.
