1942 befindet sich die Schlacht im Atlantik auf ihrem Höhepunkt. Die Alliierten stehen am Rand der Niederlage, denn Hitler schickt immer mehr U-Boote in den Kampf. Im Juni versenken die deutschen U-Boote 124 alliierte Handelsschiffe und setzen damit die Versorgung Großbritanniens empfindlich unter Druck. Bereits ab Anfang des Jahres operieren Hitlers Langstrecken-U-Boote vor der nordamerikanischen Ostküste. Später folgten Angriffe in der Karibik, vor allem vor der Küste Panamas.
In December 1941 the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor brought the USA into the Second World War. With the help of America, Britain hoped her fortunes would change in the Atlantic and the German U-boats would be defeated. But America refused to adopt the convoy system to protect merchant ships carrying vital supplies to Britain, and as a result suffered its single greatest ever naval defeat.
