Season 11

  • S11E01 Boy Scouts of America holds an annual sporting clays

    • February 23, 2011
    • Outdoor Channel

The South Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America holds an annual sporting clays invitational to raise money for Scouting programs in the region, as well as to rebuild Camp Seminole, which was destroyed by a hurricane. Join host Mark Keefe as he heads to Florida’s Quail Creek to show how shooting benefits the Boy Scouts. Keefe also reviews the semi-automatic-only belt-fed 7.62 Ohio Ordnance Model 230B SLR. The Star Model A and B pistols look like M1911s, but these Spanish guns have a rich history all their own.

  • S11E02 Taurus US Production Plant

    • March 2, 2011
    • Outdoor Channel

Taurus’ main manufacturing plants are in the firm’s home country of Brazil, but Taurus also builds guns in Miami, Fla, including the popular TCP pistol in .380 ACP. Join host Mark Keefe as he takes you through Taurus’ American manufacturing plant. Next, Keefe reviews the Uberti replica of an American classic cowboy gun, the Model 1876 Centennial in .50-95. Mauser bolt-action rifles were sold all over the world, and when the Model 1893 Chilean Mauser was introduced, it was state of the art.

  • S11E03 Taurus’ Judge revolver

    • March 9, 2011
    • Outdoor Channel

Taurus’ Judge revolver created an entirely new category of firearm—a .45 Colt revolver that can also shoot .410-bore shotshells. The Judge family has grown to include carbines, compacts and even a polymer-framed version. It turns out the judge is pretty fun on the skeet field, too. Smith & Wesson has expanded its rifle line to include the Military & Police 22, a rifle that looks like an AR, but shoots economical .22 Long Rifle. The adoption of the Colt M1911 wasn’t a sure thing, as the gun the Browning designed pistol had to beat in the U.S. Army’s trials was a .45 ACP made by Savage Arms.

  • S11E04 Petersen Gallery - National Firearms Museum Pt 1

    • March 16, 2011
    • Outdoor Channel

Robert Petersen, the founder of Petersen Publishing, started with mimeographed newsletters and turned them into a massive publishing empire, including Motor Trend, Guns & Ammo and Petersen’s Hunting. An avid hunter and gun collector, Petersen also served as commissioner for the shooting sports during the Los Angeles Olympics. Thanks to a gift from his late wife, Margie Petersen, the National Firearms Museum has a new wing called the Petersen Gallery housing hundreds of the world's most exquisite firearms. The straight-pull R8 is the latest beefed-up rendition of the innovative Blaser rifle, and Shooting Editor Glenn Gilbert evaluates the transformative Blaser. The rare wooden-stocked German MP41 is unusual in that its old school design was outdated by the MP40—which was adopted before the MP41 was even on the drawing board.

  • S11E05 Petersen Gallery - National Firearms Museum Pt 2

    • March 23, 2011
    • Outdoor Channel

We continue our look at the Robert B. Petersen Gallery at the NRA National Firearms Museum, including Herman Goering’s’ Merkel over-under that was given to General of the Army "Blackjack" Pershing by Gen. Dwight David Eisenhower and “The Devil’s Shotgun.” Assistant Editor Angus McClellan tests a new muzzleloader from hompson/Center Arms, the Impact. When Auto-Ordnance got its start, it didn’t have its own factory, so Colt’s Mfg. in Hartford, Conn., built the first Thompson submachine guns, including the Model 1928s sold to the U.S. Navy.

  • S11E06 Winchester .22 LR Production

    • March 30, 2011
    • Outdoor Channel

More than a billion rounds—that’s right, billion with a “B”—of .22 Long Rifle ammunition are made every year. One of the factories that produces a large percentage of those .22 LR cartridges is Winchester Ammunitions’ plant in Oxford, Miss. This week, we show you how Winchester makes America’s favorite cartridge. Shooting Editor Glenn Gilbert tests the Kimber Super Pro Carry .45 from the company’s custom shop. We take a look at a rifle that was obsolete before it even fully fielded—the Krag-Jorgensen—which was the U.S. military’s first smokeless powder smallbore rifle.

  • S11E07 Thompson submachine gun

    • April 6, 2011
    • Outdoor Channel

The Thompson submachine gun is an American icon. A group of collectors from the American Thompson Association gather every year to celebrate the history and heritage of the classic gun at its annual Thompson “Show and Shoot.” More velocity and energy without an increase in pressure seems too good to be true, but Managing Editor Aaron Carter demonstrates it in his review of Hornady Superformance Ammunition. When the United States entered World War I, the “doughboys” were woefully short of small arms--in particular M1911 pistols. In “I Have This Old Gun,” we cover the .45s made by Remington-UMC.

  • S11E08 Amateur Trapshooting Association’s Grand American

    • April 13, 2011
    • Outdoor Channel

With more than three miles of ranges, the Amateur Trapshooting Association’s Grand American is the biggest competitive shotgunning event in the country. Senior Executive Editor Brian Sheetz heads to Sparta, Ill., to cover it. Century Arms, best known for its imports, now offers an entirely American-made version of the semi-automatic AK-47, the Century Centurion. Until the .44 Magnum came along, the .44 Colt Walker revolver was the world’s most powerful repeating handgun. Built by Colt at the suggestion of Capt. Sam Walker, it was the gun that changed the fortunes of Sam Colt’s company for the better. Without the Walker, odds are there would be no Colt Mfg. today.

  • S11E09 Amateur Trapshooting Association’s Grand American Pt2

    • April 20, 2011
    • Outdoor Channel

For more than a century, the Amateur Trapshooting Association has provided American shooters with the opportunity to hone their clay target skills. This week we head to Sparta, Ill., for an in-depth look at the ATA. Umarex in Germany makes a licensed .22 version of the Heckler & Koch 416, and Assistant Editor Angus K. McClellan tests it in this week’s “Rifleman Review.” Used by Marine Parachutists and the First Special Service Force, the Johnson Model of 1941 is one of the most unusual light machine guns of World War II.

  • S11E10 Dr. Sidney Phillips, Jr WWII Marine Veteran

    • April 27, 2011
    • Outdoor Channel

Dr. Sidney Phillips, Jr., an NRA Life member, was a teenaged marine on Guadalcanal, and he was featured in the documentary “The War” and the HBO miniseries “The Pacific.” This week Field Editor Martin K.A. Morgan interviews Dr. Phillips, and they head to the range. The Les Baer Tactical Recon is the most accurate factory bolt-action .308 Win. rifle we’ve ever tested. During World War II, Remington-Rand—no relation to Remington Arms Co.—made M911A1 .45 pistols for American troops.

  • S11E11 The Civilian Marksmanship Program M1 Garand

    • May 4, 2011
    • Outdoor Channel

Want an M1 Garand? The Civilian Marksmanship Program’s mission to promote marksmanship and the national defense includes selling M1 Garand rifle to qualified citizens, including those who participate in marksmanship activity and veterans. Field Editor Martin K.A. Morgan takes you through the CMP’s Alabama facility. DS Arms has turned the classic FN FAL into a folding-stocked, shortened model called the Para Tactical, and it is tested by host Mark Keefe. The Lewis Light Machine Gun was the most successful gun of its type during World War I and was used the British, Belgians and Americans in the trenches of France.

  • S11E12 The Gatling Gun Pt 1

    • May 11, 2011
    • Outdoor Channel

The Gatling Gun was the first successful manually operated, rapid-fire gun, and we look at Dr. Richard Gatling’s multi-barreled invention, including guns used during the Spanish American war. Cheaper than Dirt offers DRT Ammunition, and Managing Editor Aaron Carter tested this innovative new ammunition that doesn’t expand until it hits soft tissue. During World War II the Germans created and fielded the word’s first “assault rifle,” the Stg44 Sturmgewehr in 7.92 Kurtz.

  • S11E13 The Gatling Gun Pt 2

    • May 18, 2011
    • Outdoor Channel

The Gatling Gun, weighing as much as piece of 19th century artillery, is clumsy and bulky, but it is a marvel of engineering. This week, we shoot Gatlings and show how they are made today by U.S. Armament Co. SIG Sauer makes the 522 rifle, which looks just like it’s 5.56 NATO big brother the 556, but the affordable 522 is chambered in .22 Long Rifle. The M1911 might be a century old, but Colt came up with the Officer’s ACP in the 1970s, a shorter, lighter, more concealable version of John Moses Browning’s classic design.

  • S13E22 U.S. WWII Bolt-Actions

    • Outdoor Channel

We think of the M1 Garand as the dominant rifle of WWII. But a lot of American soldiers, marines, sailors and coast guardsmen were issued bolt action rifles. In the review segments, we look at a game changer, the Springfield XD-S in .45ACP. In 1953, William B. Ruger introduced the Ruger Single Six and it came out at the right time. It was the heydays of Western movies.

Season 14

  • S14E01 NRA National Defense Match

    • January 1, 2014
    • Outdoor Channel

AR178 - The NRA National Defense Match, held at Peacemaker National Training Center in West Virginia, is a new concept match that gets semi-automatic rifle owners off the couch and out to the range, where they shooting from different positions, including prone kneeling, standing and around barricades. There are three levels, Basic, Advanced and National Championship, depending on skill level. Mark Keefe and the Rifleman crew where there for this challenging and fun new shooting sport. Also this week, Associate Editor Joe Kurtenbach tests the Walther PPQ pistol, and we look at the history of the selective-fire Ruger AC556, which was based on Bill Ruger’s Mini-14.

  • S14E02 Don't Fear The Night, Part I

    • January 8, 2014
    • Outdoor Channel

AR 179 Don't Fear The Night, Part I Most defensive encounters occur at night, so how do you know what equipment to use? And even then, does it make you more effective? Field Editor Adam Heggenstaller heads to Oregon for the Crimson Trace Midnight 3-Gun Invitational, where competitors use lights and lasers on rifles, pistols and shotguns in a challenging match fired completely in the dark. Speaking of 3-gun, Joe Kurtenbach evaluates the Stag Arms 3G rifle, built to be ready for completion right out of the box. For “I Have This Old Gun,” we bring you the recoil-operated Remington Model 11-48, one of the first new shotguns of the post-World War II era.

  • S14E03 Don't Fear The Night, Part II

    • January 15, 2014
    • Outdoor Channel

AR180 Don't Fear The Night, Part II Does having a light and/or a laser on your personal protection firearm make a difference in low-light conditions? How about no-light conditions? That’s a lesson you’ll learn from Adam Heggenstaller as he runs lights and lasers at Crimson Trace’s Midnight 3-Gun Invitational. The latest concealed carry pistol from Springfield Armory is the small, thin XD(S), which is now offered in 9 mm Luger, and we evaluate it this week as our “Rifleman Review.” The Walther PPK/S is a gun that was created in response the Gun Control Act of 1968, and we look at it as this week’s “I Have This Old Gun.”

  • S14E04 Melvin Forbes & His Rifles

    • January 22, 2014
    • Outdoor Channel

AR181 Melvin Forbes & His Rifles West Virginia gunmaker Melvin Forbes has changed the way shooters and hunters look at lightweight hunting rifles. We caught up with Forbes at his shop, and found his ideas on how to build Ultra Light Arms rifles go far beyond the number of rifles he has sold. Cowboy guns are fun to shoot, even if they really weren’t around back then. One such gun is the .22 Long Rifle Uberti Silver Boy, a new design with Old West flavor. We also look at the Sten Machine Carbine, the simple gun that armed British and Commonwealth troops during World War II and armed resistance fighters standing up to Nazi tyranny.

  • S14E05 Lost Brigade Project

    • January 29, 2014
    • Outdoor Channel

AR182 Lost Brigade Project For wounded veterans, there are many challenges to adjusting to civilian life. One of the things they miss is the comradeship of being with others who know what they are going through. The Lost Brigade Project brings wounded warriors and their families together for a weekend of marskmanship competition, fun and comradery at the Peacemaker National Training Center in West Virginia. The Kimber Master Carry Pro combines a Commander-size M1911 with Crimson Trace Master Series Lasergrips into a package the editors of American Rifleman named 2014 “Handgun of the Year,” and this week we head to the range with it. The Italian Carcano rifle seems to not get a lot of respect, but it served the Italian military for a half a century, and was actually a pretty good rifle, as we show you in “I Have This Old Gun.”

  • S14E06 NRA National Sporting Arms Museum: The Grand Tour

    • February 5, 2014
    • Outdoor Channel

AR 183 NRA National Sporting Arms Museum: The Grand Tour Can’t get the National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, Virginia? How about Springfield, Missouri? At the Bass Pro Shops flagship store, the new NRA National Sporting Arms Museum has more than 1,000 firearms on display, including guns from NRA’s collection, the Remington Arms collection, the National Trapshooting Hall of Fame, the Pachmayr collection and more. This week we give you the grand tour of this impressive new facility—and you don’t even need to leave your couch. For our "Rifleman Review," Mark Keefe heads to the range with the Weatherby SA-08 chambered in 28 gauge. This lightweight semi-automatic points like a magic wand. We also look at the Swedish military Mausers, accurate collectible bolt-actions that once guaranteed Sweden’s neutrality.

  • S14E07 NRA National Sporting Arms Museum: “Top Guns”

    • February 12, 2014
    • Outdoor Channel

AR 184 NRA National Sporting Arms Museum: “Top Guns” Where’s a tour guide when you need one? This week National Firearms Museum Senior Curator—and American RiflemanTelevision Field Editor—Philip Schreier gives you an exclusive look at the “top guns” at the new NRA National Sporting Arms Museum. Ike’s Model 21? Yeah, we have it. Napoleon’s Boutet? We have that too. Benelli launched a new shotgun this year, the Ethos, and Mark Keefe evaluates this soft-kicking semi-automatic 12 gauge for this week’s “Rifleman Review.” Ever heard of the Johnson .22 Spitfire Carbine? Well, it’s this week “I Have This Old Gun.” Like many of Melvin Maynard Johnson’s inventions, it was a great idea that just did not catch on with the public.

  • S14E08 Going Big And Going Quiet: J.D. Jones

    • February 19, 2014
    • Outdoor Channel

AR 185 Going Big And Going Quiet: J.D. Jones You may have never heard of J.D. Jones, but he has had a huge impact on handgun hunting and the firearm industry. Ever heard of .300 Whisper? That was him. This week, Managing Editor Aaron Carter catches up with and heads to the range with J.D. Jones. Optics on a defensive handgun? It’s a coming trend, one represented by the Smith & Wesson M&P C.O.R.E. pistol, which comes ready for a red-dot right out of the box. Ever heard of a Winchester Model 24? It’s a budget side-by-side Winchester came up with to compete with brands such as Stevens. This week in “I Have This Old Gun,” we look back at this clubby Winchester double gun.

  • S14E09 1914: The Guns Of August, Part I

    • February 26, 2014
    • Outdoor Channel

AR186 1914: The Guns Of August, Part I A century ago, the world was engulfed in a conflict greater than was even imaginable. This week we start our look at the standard bolt-action battle rifles of the Great Powers at the outbreak of the “War to end all Wars.” Affordable, accurate .22 Long Rifle bolt-actions have a new bar to meet—one that is set by the Ruger American .22 Rifle, which we evaluate this week. The Thompson Submachine Gun is one of the greatest designs of all time, but with the need to produce them faster in the darkest days of World War II, they needed to speed up production. The result was the M1A1 Thompson.

  • S14E10 1914: The Guns Of August, Part II

    • March 5, 2014
    • Outdoor Channel

AR 187 1914: The Guns Of August, Part II August 1914 proved to be a bloody month for the armies of the Great Powers because infantry tactics had not caught up with technology—including the firepower of bolt-action rifles. We continue our look at the main rifles of the opening days of World War I with range work and commentary from American Rifleman’s panel of firearm historians. Ruger suspended production of its over-under Red Label to make some improvements—and bring the price down. Its back and better than ever, and Mark Keefe takes you through the Red Label. The Avtomat Kalashnikov is, hand down, the most produced firearm in history. Made all over the world, one of the most plentiful variations is the Chinese Type 56, which is this week’s “I Have This Old Gun.”

  • S14E11 Long Range Precision 1

    • July 2, 2014
    • Outdoor Channel

This week the American Rifleman crew heads to S.A.A.M. Safari course in Barksdale, Texas for long range precision training. In the Rifleman Review we take a look at the Remington R51 and in “I Have This Old Gun” we look at the handgun that started World War 1: the FN Model 1910.

  • S14E12 Long Range Precision 2

    • July 9, 2014
    • Outdoor Channel

This week the American Rifleman crew heads back to S.A.A.M. Safari course in Barksdale, Texas for more long range precision training. In the Rifleman Review we take a look at the Kimber Mountain Ascent, and in “I Have This Old Gun” we look at the Egyptian’s Rasheed Carbine.
