    Kathy Sykes, professor of Science and Society at Bristol, examines alternative therapies in Europe and the US. Half a million people in England use hypnotherapy every year. It's claimed it can help with addiction, phobias, allergies and even breast enlargement. Kathy meets Richard, who wants to quit smoking; Nicola, who wants to eat less; and Mandy, who wants teeth implants without anaesthetic. Kathy tries hypnosis herself and discovers the scientific explanation for the hypnotic trance.

Reflexologists claim that the body is mapped onto the soles of the feet, and that pressing particular points can help with medical problems. In Florida, Kathy meets the nephew of the woman who coined the term reflexology. She meets a reflexologist in Sheffield who claims to cure infertility. Many medical professionals doubt reflexology is of any benefit, but a professor in Hull says it helps cancer patients feel relaxed.

Kathy journeys to a town in Iowa, where children meditate every day at school. She discovers Yogic Flying. Back in the UK, Kathy meets Professor Mark Williams, an NHS doctor who prescribes meditation to treat depression.
