Tollmingkehmen war vor dem Krieg ein Kirchdorf nahe der berühmten Rominter Heide, zwanzig Kilometer von der damaligen Grenze zu Litauen entfernt. Im Oktober 1944 wird es evakuiert, russische Truppen besetzen das von Deutschen verlassene Dorf - es ist der Anfang vom Ende des alten Ostpreußen.
