Ruthie braucht dringend 29,99 Dollar für Walkie-Talkies. Erics Vorschlag, ein paar Wochen den Müll raus zu bringen, lehnt sie entrüstet ab. Arbeiten kommt überhaupt nicht in Frage! Aber es trifft sich gut, dass Lucy für eine Verabredung ein Top von Mary braucht und Mary wiederum gerne Annies Ohrringe hätte. Ruthie spinnt ein Netz von Gefälligkeiten, um auch ohne Arbeit an die Walkie-Talkies zu kommen. Leider bricht im letzten Moment der ganze schöne Plan zusammen. Mary soll zusammen mit Mannschaftskollegin Corey den Sportpreis ihrer Schule bekommen. Vor der Preisverleihung kommt heraus, dass Corey schon seit ihrem 14. Lebensjahr eine uneheliche Tochter hat. Die Sponsoren lehnen sie daraufhin als Preisträgerin ab. Mary hält bei der Preisverleihung eine bewegende Rede auf ihre Mitschülerin und überreicht ihr den eigenen Preis. Simons neuer Freund Lee gibt mächtig mit seinem Vater an, der angeblich Privatdetektiv sei und schon für CIA und NASA gearbeitet habe. Eric findet mit Hilfe von Sergeant Michaels heraus, dass Jeff Peterson in Wirklichkeit ein drogenabhängiger Ex-Sträfling ist.

Mary and her friend Corey Conway learn that they have been named recipients of their senior classes "All Sports Award" and they are both thrilled. Although, the local businessmen revoke the honor from Corey when they learn Corey is a mother. Angered and hurt by their actions, Mary gives her reward to Corey in front of the entire assembly. On the home front, tensions build after Eric and Annie find a bag of marijuana in Simon's new friend's backpack. They confront his family (who at first deny there is an issue), but after a successful intervention with the police, the boy's father agrees to seek counseling and to find a job. Meanwhile, Matt faces a disciplinary action after he breaks the honor code during a school exam. Also, Lucy questions herself whether she should help a boy she likes to access the school's computer system when she's working in the attendance office.
