يتمكن اليأس من “هربرت دوبرفيلد” بعد وفاة أخيه وزوج أخته خلال معارك الحرب العالمية، ولكن سرعان ما يشعر بالأمل من جديد عندما يتجه للسودان ويعلن إسلامه ويغير اسمه، ومن ثم يتجه إلى الصعيد المصري، حيث يقع هناك في حب امرأة مصرية.
