Als Gegenbewegung zum Hippietum kam die Revolution der Musikwelt laut, unheimlich und düster daher: 1969 kombinierten Black Sabbath satanische Texte mit rituellen Handlungen auf der Bühne und schufen damit den Heavy Metal. Typisch für diesen Stil sind depressiv provokante Texte, der stärkere Grundbeat, verzerrte Gitarrenklänge und das Schlagzeugsolo. Weitere wichtige Vertreter dieser Musikrichtung sind Deep Purple, Iron Maiden und Metallica.
