精编版基本上保留了原剧中官渡、赤壁、彝陵三大战役等宏伟、宏观场面和其他一些精彩重场戏，补足和加强了诸葛亮的镜头，使诸葛亮这个人物明知不可为而为之、鞠躬尽瘁死而后己的精神品格，得到更透彻地体现，从而突出了诸葛亮作为《三国演义》的第一人物的传统观念；同时，对保留下来的原剧中一些欠缺和疏漏，如在配音中的错误以及对剧情和人物解释不准确等，都尽可能地做了必要的纠正。另外，经过重新剪辑，全剧的节奏加快了，整个故事的叙述也更加流畅了。在各集片头，增加了主持人，面对观众介绍本集的历史背景和故事梗概，在剧情当中增加旁白，交待来龙去脉，起到承上启下的作用，并在全剧中打出全部台词字幕，从视听全方位上方便观众理解中国传统文化的内涵。
