ＴＶ局の報道セクションを舞台に、海外支局勤めを終え帰国したプロデューサー・矢島俊介（三上）や白石紀子（原田）などの記者、キャスター、ディレクターなどが、視聴率低迷にあえぐ報道番組「ストレートニュース」を高視聴率番組にすべく奔走する。 テレビ局や報道現場の裏側をリアルに描きつつ、ニュースの背後にあるオンエアされることのない人間模様をクローズアップする。 主人公は、テレビジャパン報道局内で日夜頑張る２０人の熱き報道マンたち。 個性豊かなこの主人公たちが、様々なタブーに直面しつつ、社会問題や報道姿勢に関する問題に取り組んでいく。
