剧中，主人公吴承恩大智若愚、崇尚公正、风流倜傥、诗文书画、千古一绝；孙悟空、唐僧、猪八戒等《西游记》人物，与剧中原始人物形象交相辉映；丰富奇绝的神话、幻想、侠游与大胆有趣的艺术表现样式、现代高科技的立体表现手段、极大地扩展了天上人间的非凡想像。 明朝嘉靖年间，江苏淮安山阳县被嫡小吏吴悦携子前往花果山云台寺，与故交普因和尚交谈企盼儿子吴承恩能够读书做官、荣宗耀祖。然而，读书过目不忘、极具天赋的吴承恩，却喜欢上了花果山水帘洞里那些活蹦乱跳的猴子，想象着自己也能像猴子们一样自由自在、天马行空、无所不能。
