洪秀全（呂良偉）篤信受上帝託付，創拜上帝會，因滿清腐敗，其妻杜惠貞（商天娥）被清庭所殺，遂起義金田；楊秀清（黃日華）、蕭朝貴（劉青雲）、石達開（黎漢持）、李秀成（歐瑞偉）及韓寶英（鄧萃雯）等先後加入，終建立太平天國，震驚滿清皇朝。 及後楊秀清欲奪權，勾搭傅善祥（蔡嘉利）亂政，洪秀全遂以妹宣嬌（陳敏兒）嫁蕭朝貴以制衡，秀清含恨。後全迷戀葉苓（毛舜筠），大權旁落，苓藉清殺異己，再伏誅清獨掌朝綱；惟時人才凋零、國事日衰，至全醒悟，殺苓力圖反撲，但大勢已去，悽然服毒身死，太平天國夢想幻滅。
