小泉八雲役を演じるのは「ウエストサイド物語」で一躍スターとなったジョージ・チャキリス 「雪おんな」「耳なし芳一のはなし」などの怪談話で知られるラフカディオ・ハーン（小泉八雲）。その波乱にとんだ生涯は、明治以降の日本が近代化の過程で見失いつつあった「心の故郷」とは何かを問いかけている。古きよき世界を求めて明治時代をさまよったハーンの心の世界を幻想的に描く。
