定年退職後の老夫婦が、海外も視野に生きがいを求める姿を追う人間ドラマ。バブル景気下で推奨された高齢者の海外移住計画を背景に、山田太一が岐路に立つ二人暮らしの夫婦の生き方を描出する。定年を迎えた後、家に引きこもりがちな竜作（大滝）に不満を覚える昭子（八千草）は、気乗りしない夫を説き伏せ老後の海外移住を掲げる見学ツアーにともに参加し、オーストラリアのパースに1週間滞在するが、帰国後の夫婦の心情に変化…
