Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space. As a citizen of the Soviet Union she became a symbol of defeat to the West during the Space Race. As the USSR had not only beaten the USA, by sending the first man, Yuri Gagarin to space, but also by letting the first female cosmonaut follow shortly after.
