鎌倉幕府を開いた源頼朝の妻であり、二代将軍・頼家と三代将軍・実朝の母である政子の生涯を中心に、関東に武家政権を築いた頼朝の時代から、北条氏が実権を握り政権を盤石にした承久の乱までを描く。源頼朝役の石坂浩二、北条政子役の岩下志麻をはじめ、源頼家を郷ひろみ、源実朝を篠田三郎らが好演して注目を浴びた。
