Ny-Ålesund is a place in Norway that belongs to the Spitsbergen Archipelago, in Svalbard. It is considered the northernmost settlement on earth. In the past, hard coal was mined there. Today, Ny-Ålesund is the location of a research centre that employs up to 180 scientists from all over the world. Philippe met the Dutch biologist Maarten Loonen and learned how the researchers cope with the Arctic conditions.
