70年代后期，南方某小城的一个小宅院里生活着赵、叶、彭三家人。赵方圆和老伴唐妙香养育了赵家仁、赵家慧、赵家信、赵家义、赵家好五个孩子，一家人过着清贫但温馨的生活。赵方圆受父亲之托，帮叶老保存着一幅画。一次意外中，为救家仁的未婚妻那红，古画落入彭世忠手中，彭世忠以此不断向老赵要挟勒索，甚至他女儿彭新华也加入其中，以此拆散了赵家慧和欧阳的爱情。叶老儿子叶文祥一直恐惧出身问题，拒绝承认古画与自己有关，改革开放后，他得知古画真正价值后，又软硬兼施逼赵方圆归还古画。为了信守父亲的承诺，赵方圆与彭家展开了漫长较量，围绕着古画，三家的儿女们也展开了他们各自纠缠的爱恨情仇，几十年过去了，古稀之年的赵方圆终于见证了物归原主。
