Charles Martel (690 - 741) est le fondateur de la dynastie carolingienne. Il est connu pour sa victoire à Poitiers sur les Arabes qui avaient envahi l'Aquitaine (732). Après la reconquête de la Bourgogne et de la Provence, son pouvoir s'est tellement affermi que, sans déposer le roi mérovingien Thierry IV, mort en 737, il dispose du royaume qu'il partage entre ses deux fils Carloman et Pépin le Bref.
Charles Martel (690 - 741) is the founder of the Carolingian dynasty. He is known for his victory in Poitiers over the Arabs who had invaded Aquitaine (732). After the reconquest of Burgundy and Provence, his power became so strong that, without deposing the Merovingian king Thierry IV, who died in 737, he had the kingdom at his disposal, which he divided between his two sons Carloman and Pepin the Short.
