20世紀30年代，帝國主義的鐵蹄肆意踐踏古老的中華大地，敵人所到之處一片焦土，民不聊生，中華民族到了生死存亡的危急時刻。武邑縣民兵隊長李大本事（黃海波 飾），是一個有些狡黠卻一腔熱情與赤誠農家漢子，他打仗時候經常不按常理出牌，時不時又耍點兒小聰明，不過他的隊伍卻在抗擊日寇的戰爭中打出了名氣。在這一過程中，他與對頭孫成海（李健 飾）由對立到合作，與前國民黨軍官陳鋒（王雷 飾）惺惺相惜。名頭越來越響，自然引起日寇的高度關注，這些平凡的中國人與敵人的戰爭漸次白熱化，他們也各自經歷著種種生離死別。 本劇講述了一支沒有正規建制番號的八路軍獨立團可歌可泣的悲壯故事。一次突發的阻擊戰，將民兵隊長李赤水推上了前線。
