Akcja serialu rozpoczyna się w momencie wybuchu powstania styczniowego w zaborze rosyjskim. Jeden z synów Pasternika chce wziąć w nim udział. Jednak ojciec kategorycznie mu tego zabrania. Jego życiową dewizą jest bowiem: "Tu żyć, być i tu walczyć o Polskę". Wierny tym słowom wie jednak, że do odzyskania niepodległości nie wystarczą entuzjazm i piękne hasła. Potrzeba jeszcze ludzi światłych, wykształconych, którzy nie dadzą się ogłupić pierwszej lepszej propagandzie. Wysyła więc syna do seminarium, by uczył się na księdza. Zdaje sobie sprawę, że z ambony będzie on mógł przepajać serca słuchaczy szczerym patriotyzmem i umiłowaniem rodzimych tradycji.
The series begins at the outbreak of the January Uprising in the Russian partition. One of Pasternik’s sons wishes to take part in it. However, his father categorically forbids him. His guiding principle is: ‘To live here, to be here, and to fight here for Poland.’ Faithful to these words, he knows that enthusiasm and fine slogans alone are not enough to regain independence. What is needed are enlightened, educated people who will not be deceived by the first propaganda that comes along. He therefore sends his son to the seminary to study for the priesthood. He realizes that from the pulpit his son will be able to fill the hearts of listeners with genuine patriotism and love of native traditions.
