一个三代同堂的大家庭，老爷子盼望孩子们能常回家看看，结果五个孩子各忙各的，老人一气之下谎称病重，要求孩子们轮流值班回家做饭，还以严格的家规要求他们回家住。此时，人到中年的儿女们也遭遇了各自的困境，当厂长的老大思想守旧，因为工厂效益不好和工人们发生矛盾，赌气辞职，下岗在家；老二生意做得红火，却长期和妻子冷战；老三离婚了，女儿判给了妻子，前妻带着女儿来看爷爷奶奶，突然晕倒在厨房……每个人都有他们的难处，谁都不容易，老爷子开始反省，自己对儿女的要求似乎太苛刻了。于是，他和老伴暗下决心，也要为孩子们办些实事。
