Maria Perego

Maria Perego was an Italian television author, animation artist, creator in 1959, together with the author and director Guido Stagnaro and her husband Federico Caldura, of the character Topo Gigio. Perego introduced a new technique unknown in the peninsula, using puppets instead of drawing, inspired by the Czech Jiří Trnka (and which followed the Italian tradition of puppet theatre). In the 1950s you created several characters dedicated to young people. Before Topo Gigio, the most famous of them was Woodpecker Cannocchiale, for which Perego was inspired by an already existing character, much loved by children: Woodpecker from Universal Pictures. The coordinates for creating "Topo Gigio" were provided to her, through drawings and precise indications on how she should move and pose, by the television director and author Guido Stagnaro, taking Mickey Mouse as a reference. Topo Gigio saw the light in 1959, and its fortune was due to some programs broadcast in prime time, with the voice of the actor and dubber Peppino Mazzullo. The mouse attracted not only children (due to its smallness and childish nature), but also an adult audience. At the end of the 1950s Topo Gigio was a guest on programs with a very high audience rating, such as Canzonissima (alongside the presenters Nino Manfredi and Delia Scala). One of the many peculiarities of this character is the representation of reality as well as fiction, because, despite being a fictional character, he also faces real problems, which are part of everyone's life. His fame then became international, appearing as a guest on television programs around the world, including the Ed Sullivan Show. In 1974 Topo Gigio was even co-host of Canzonissima, supported by Raffaella Carrà and Cochi and Renato: he duetted with famous singers (such as Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra).
