Leon Trotsky

Lev Davidovich Bronstein (known as Leon Trotsky) was a Russian-Ukrainian revolutionary and Marxist theorist. A central figure in the Russian Revolution of 1917 alongside Lenin, he founded and commanded the Red Army. After Lenin's death, Trotsky became Stalin's main rival, advocating Permanent Revolution (the international expansion of socialism). Expelled from the USSR in 1929 and persecuted, he was eventually assassinated in Mexico in 1940 on Stalin's orders. Ideologically Marxist, Trotsky's writings and thoughts inspired an important school of ideology known as Trotskyism.
