Karl Marx (1818–1883) was an influential German philosopher, economist, and political theorist. He is the leading author of Marxism and scientific socialism. Marx developed theories of class struggle and surplus value, arguing that history is driven by the conflict between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. In his major work, Capital, he criticizes capitalism, predicting a workers' revolution to establish communism (a classless, stateless society). His ideas inspired revolutionary movements and regimes throughout the 20th century.
