During the late Edo period, Ryosaku Kasahara works as a doctor in a small town of the Fukui Domaine. He becomes aware of a surefire way to prevent smallpox. The method originated from a foreign country. Ryosaku Kasahara asks Doctor Teisai Hino in Kyoto for advice and he even spends his own money to bring smallpox seedings to the Fukui Domaine. Ryosaku Kasahara keeps working on the unprecedented smallpox prevention methods with his wife Chiho Kasahara’s support, despite various difficulties.
