A white, fluffy dog, who has no owner but goes by the name Wasao, jumps out of a wagon and has been roaming around the town ever since. He feeds on what he finds and does not feel obliged to any of the villagers. The young restaurant owner Setsuko regularly gives the shy dog a few scraps of fish and slowly develops a relationship with him. But the dog feels much more drawn to the boy Akira, who, together with Setsuko, takes care of the stray dogs in the area. Akira, however, finds it difficult to trust Wasao, as a similar-looking dog was previously involved in an accident with his mother.
