Ramatoulaye, mère de sept enfants, est directrice d'une école primaire à Dakar. Mariée à Modou depuis 30 ans, elle est sous le choc lorsqu'il décide de prendre une seconde épouse, Binetou, 20 ans. S'ensuit une lutte acharnée entre tradition et modernité, opposant des visions très différentes du rôle des femmes dans la société africaine contemporaine.
