Due anziani genitori decidono di intraprendere un viaggio da Onomichi a Tokyo per vedere i loro figli. Una volta arrivati, si accorgeranno che il soggiorno si rivelerà diverso da ciò che si sarebbero aspettati, poiché i figli sono sempre impegnati con i loro rispettivi lavori.
Als Shukichi und Tomi nach langer Reise in Tokio ankommen, merken sie schnell, dass ihre beiden ältesten Kinder Kōichi und Shige wenig Zeit für sie haben. Sohn Kōichi ist Arzt, Tochter Shige hat einen Schönheitssalon. Wirkliche Aufmerksamkeit bekommt das angereiste Seniorenpaar nur von Noriko, der Witwe des im Zweiten Weltkrieg gefallenen Sohnes.
A retired couple, Shūkichi and Tomi Hirayama (played by Chishū Ryū and Chieko Higashiyama), live in the town Onomichi, Hiroshima in southwest Japan with their daughter Kyōko (played by Kyōko Kagawa), who is a primary-school teacher. They have five adult children, four living. The couple travel to Tokyo to visit their son, daughter and widowed daughter-in-law.
