After the death of her father, Ruth Reading inherits a large forest area. Her boyfriend Don Mackay is a neighboring farmer. Ruth's cousin James Cluxton receives a letter informing him that if Ruth does not get married before she turns 21, the ownership of the forest will be his. He remembers that in three months, Ruth will be 21 years old. Cluxton's confidant "Bull" Joyce tells him that Ruth is spending a lot of time with Don Mackay. Joyce is confident that if the relationship continues, Cluxton can say goodbye to the forest heritage.
