Juan es un mediador que luchó por la paz entre ETA y el gobierno español. Roberto es el agente del servicio secreto que se infiltró en su vida durante años. The Spy Within sigue la historia del padre del director, Juan, y el hombre, Roberto, que lo espió; su amistad se mantuvo a pesar de la traición. También narra la relación de los cineastas con Roberto y su lucha por comprender quién es realmente.
